I am looking for information on how I might be able to run a report in general ledger that gives me the breakdown by vendor and GL code. Like how many costs are coded to a specific vendor.

Take a look at the AP module reports. There is a report for Invoice GL distribution. I normally will pull up a vendor and export to EXCEL to sort the expenses. Hope this helps.

Or you could run the Detail Trial Balance with XLS report - then pop into EXCEL and then use a Pivot table to sort and total by Vendor

I agree. The AP, Reports, Invoice G/L Distribution report I feel is your best option.
