Can't Add New Product Codes in Item Maintenance

When we enter a new item code into "Item Maintenance," it used to create a new product in the system. However now when we enter a new product code, everything goes blank, but it says "NEW" right by the Description (as it would do before). Everything else is blank, and when you try and enter Product Line or any other information, it gives a message "This field cannot be set for the current item type." 

What would be causing this? Can anybody help?

    Did anyone set scripts to run against CI_Item?  Advanced Field Settings?

    Miscellaneous Items use the same table / business object, and it sounds like someone might have added customizations without considering inventory items.

    I created a UDF for Sales Order Detail, which i brought into Invoice Detail, over the weekend. The only thing I did with this UDF is to use it to suppress certain items from printing on some Crystal Forms. Could this have caused that? I have done this before with no issues. I guess I ran "suppression scripts" in Crystal Reports against a UDF in Sales Order Detail, but I thought that only had to do with printing. Is there any guidance you can give me on how to troubleshoot this? Or should I contact our provider? I am not an expert at this, so I might be getting in over my head.

    Nothing to do with SO or forms would cause a problem when creating items.

    You aren't starting the new item code with a "/" are you?
