How to add a visual marker to identify X3 folders

1 minute read time.

In this blog I would like to show how you can color code your X3 folders to help identify which folder you are currently working on. This can be useful to be able to see at a glance if you are working on a test or production folder.  It's very easy to make the change and let's see how to do it.

Go to Administration, Administration, Endpoints, Endpoints.  In our example we will affect changes to the SEED and Reference folders.

We will start with the SEED folder. Click on Edit (pencil icon) next to the SEED folder.  In the Server parameters tab, locate the Nature dropdown box. Change the value of the dropdown to TEST and from the right-side menu, click Save

Then, from the right-side menu click on List of endpoints to go to back to the list. Now click on the Edit(pencil dot) next to the X3 Reference folder. Repeat the process to change the Nature dropdown and select Production.

After making the changes, log out and back into Sage X3. When you connect to this endpoint the color appears near the name folder. You should now see the color coding squares next to the endpoints from the dropdown as shown below. An orange square should be next to the SEED folder and green box next the X3 reference folder, when you click on the folder dropdown from the main menu.

Hope you find this tip useful if you ever need to color code your folders.  This is an easy way to make those changes and let yours users know to which folder they are logged.

  • This colored badge is helpful, but many users still overlook it when they have access to multiple production folders.  We typically import a custom "Frequently used" landing page that can be customized for the client.  We then set a unique background color on the process background for each folder.  This does need to be maintained when making folder copies but is also much more visible during daily use.

  • This is a must have, the full header should change colors to avoid costly mistakes. In regions where we have strong legal regulations, undoing some mistakes is nearly impossible.

  • Hi, I really think a more noticeable change in the identification of dossiers is necessary. Not only end users fall into the mistake, it happens even to technical and functional users as well.

  • SAGE really needs to do a better job with this feature.  While the different folder title and small color indicator are helpful for some, it's really not enough for the majority of users to quickly notice that they may be in the wrong sage folder, especially if you add a new database.  Most other ERPs that I've worked in have a much more obvious way that they show people if they are in LIVE vs. TEST vs. DEV.  In my humble opinion SAGE X3 should change the color of the entire header to match the FOLDER ID.  So as example if you are in the LIVE production database the entire header is GREEN, if you are in the TEST database the entire header is ORANGE and if you are in the DEV database the entire header is RED.  SEED, SYRACUSE and other folders the header can remain the black color, as users should not be given to that folder anyway.  I would love or SAGE to see this, I'm also reaching out to them directly, about a methodology to implement this in the near future.  If anyone has any ideas themselves via HTML/CSS edit on the main template or other, then please feel free to comment with instructions.  Thank you.
