Why do my backups keep on failing?

We recently shared some information on Sage City about the different backups available and which backups to make when.

Over the last few months our support desk was flooded with users struggling to make backups as the backups keep on failing. A lot of problem solving goes into finding a solution, so in this post we will share the most common yet important checks to perform to ensure your backup runs successfully:

  • If your data backup or data for all companies backup is failing, ensure that no one else is accessing the payroll while the backup is being made. If you work in a network environment and no one else is logged in, you might want IT to restart the server to close all possible instances as sometimes users do not close the payroll system properly, leaving files open over the network

Our most common backup that fails, is the full system backup as this backup does not only just contain data files, but all program files and non system files, such as Word Documents, Excel and PDF documents stored in the payroll system folder.

  • If your full system backup is failing, try making a data backup only and if you have more than one company, data for all companies. If those backups run successfully, then we know the issue is not relating to data files, but either program files or other non system files that are locked.
