BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!! Ransomware and many other potential threats to your company data are real and dangerous!

NEVER, EVER underestimate the real threat of ransomware attacks or other crisis's such as SQL server crashes, -theft, and/or -fire/water damage, as well as significant levels of data corruption.

All of these occurrences would be dreadful and just disastrous to your Evolution (or any other kind of accounting, HR/Payroll software) companies to put it lightly.

Just to again stress the importance of not only having regular (MINIMUM WEEKLY), but also how they are stored/maintained, please consider the following real life case study of an Evolution client that came to our attention:

The client was diligently making backups, all good there. But they used an external drive that was 'permanently' connected to the server PC and thought they were covered.

However, a terrible catastrophe hit them when a ransomware attack not only locked the SQL server PC but also the external drive!

That meant they lost about 8 months worth of Evolution company information in a single data hack!

Therefore, having a proper company backup is only truly possible if at least the following conditions have been met:

1) The backup files should exits in at least 2 separate places away from the SQL server, and definitely not on an external drive connected to the server PC!

Therefore, consider saving your backups on:

  • A secure Cloud drive and
  • An external drive that is regularly scanned for viruses/malware and ONLY temporary connected to the server while copying the latest  backup file on it.

2) Creating regular backups is non-negotiable - al least once a week as a minimum but also consider the amount of work you're willing to recapture/process in case any of the above mentioned crisis's hit your company.

3) A disaster recovery plan has been properly planned and tested in case you need to restore a company backup and ensure you get back to normality as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Please always take care, be vigilant and never allow any of the abovementioned disasters to cause misery, regret and anguish, each one that could easily have been prevented.
