numbering

What is a good numbering system for vendor and client Id's?  I assume we can't use letters?

we use the same format for our vendors, clients and employees.  First three letters of first name and first three letters of last name.  John Doe would be JOHDOE, Sage Construction would be SAGCON.

Sage 100 Contractor requires only whole numbers for numbering vendors, clients, jobs, employee and virtually everything else.  Users coming from other systems that don't include Sage100Con's powerful record finding capabilities tend to insist on structuring their record numbering schemes, but I counsel against it because its too much trouble and too easy to foul it up over time.  Use the data fields available to you (types, statuses, project dates, etc) and you won't need to bother structuring your numbers.  Assign numbers consecutively and move on.

Yeah, I've been using sequential whole numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) since I started with Sage 100 Contractor 12 years ago.  No regrets.

Can you go back and update job numbers in Sage 100 contractor.  Previous person had no idea what they were doing, and there is no rhyme-or-reason to the numbering system.

I wasnt sure if i can go back and edit those numbers... does anyone know about this?

    Thnx,
