Old unreconciled transactions

I'm hoping somebody can help me here.  

I have some old transactions that haven't been included on previous bank recs undertaken by somebody else.  However, these transactions have been included in VAT returns.  I have no idea how they've managed to reconcile the bank.  Is there a way of removing these items from the list when I go to do a current bank rec?
