FPS claim back SMP

Posted By FormerMember

Please can anyone advise.  We have a member of staff on maternity and is being paid SMP.  Do I need to claim this back each month through the Employer Payment Submission? if so is it the figure that appears on my Form P32 under SMP e.g. £3743.06.  I am a little confused as a couple of months ago when I had a query to do with Payroll and spoke to an advisor who was brill by the way! it was mentioned about this Employer Payment Submission because I had not claimed anything back.  My understanding was at that time this was something I had to do monthly.  I am also finding that my P32 figure is not the same as the FPS figure, this being considerably bigger than the value on the P32 form.  Even when deducting the SMP from the FPS printout it does not come out the same.  Basically, a little confused, can anyone advise?

Thanks

    Hi Karen

    Thanks for using Sage City.

There's quite a lot going on here! The way that reclaim of SMP works is that the amount of SMP paid each period to the employee is reported on your FPS.

The EPS then sends a Year to date Figure for the amount of SMP paid by the company to all employees that is reclaimable (depending on your employer type this is either 92% or 103% of SMP paid).

Your P32 will show the SMP reclaimable in this period - this figure will not be the same as the amount on your EPS (as it does not include earlier periods) or your FPS (as it is the amount reclaimable).

You should submit your EPS every month and continue to pay HMRC the amount as calculated by your P32 form.
