Employee moving from Northern Ireland to Ireland

We as a company have employees in Ireland & Northern Ireland. ROI & UK payroll systems, if one employee decides to move down to Ireland. Do I need to move him onto the ROI payroll system or can he stay on UK payroll system. Is there anything legislation I should follow or any advice ?

  • Hi Cara,

    Thank for using Community Hub.

From the Citizen's Information advice page - Cross border workers in Ireland - it depends on where they will be working.

If they are working within Northern Ireland and that company has a PAYE Reference, then it would be the UK Payroll.

Alternatively if their employment was to move to Republic of Ireland and that company is paying tax to the Irish Revenue, then they would need to be moved to the ROI Payroll.

Hope this helps and for any further information, I'd recommend speaking to either the HMRC or Citizen's advice.
