Email help for old version of sage

Hi I don't know if anyone has some experience setting up and sending invoices and statements by email on a fairly old version of sage.

We have recently upgraded our computer and moved over the sage software. To send statements on our old computer we just highlighted the customer and clicked statements -> email. Using a fairly standard email template.

I have compared the settings on sage and sage report designer and the email client 'Thunderbird', from the old computer to the new. And made sure email setting are exactly the same as before.

But when sending the statement this error message appears on sage.

Error with the address a*************@hotmail.com : Unknown Error. Please check Windows Event Log for more details.

I found the event viewer on windows and the details for this error are:

System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: The operation has timed out.
at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Send(MailMessage message)
at Sage.Email.SMTP.SmtpMailer.SendMail(Email email, SendMailOption whenToSend)

This is now beyond me and I don't know where I should be looking to get this to work again. It's probably a really easy setting to be changed, but I've tried countless variations and it's always the same error.

I have called sage support, but they don't cover support for versions this old and they just try to sell me their new expensive subscription models which have less functionality than my current one.

If anyone knows a fix or workaround, great. Or of a competent IT support they might know that I can pay to log onto my computer and sort it for me. Manually saving statements and emailing is very time consuming.

We're using:

Sage 50 Accounts Plus 2014

Version 20.04.09.364

Report Designer Version 1.4.2013.27

Windows 11 Home

Thanks in advance.

Alex

We had this issue a couple of weeks ago when using the current version (V29) with Outlook 2016 on our Windows11 pcs. There is a knowledgebase entry with a small file download which had worked a couple of years ago but did not work on this occasion.

If it was working but has stopped it is possibly the result of a recent Microsoft update which requires completion. What seemed to work was a complete shutdown and restart of the PC and possibly a sign on as local/global administrator.

    Good Luck.

System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: The operation has timed out.

This is the key info from that error message. Basically it means that the Accounts/Report Designer application was unable to contact your mail server (as specified in your email settings) within a given period (30 seconds by default).

Best thing to check is your email settings are correctly configured and that your firewall is allowing access to the configured mail server/port.
