I had exactly the same problem last year, ended up restoring a backup onto another computer, ran year end and restored the backup onto the original computer. Not ideal. This year I'm going to delete a load of stuff first - old VAT returns, remittance advices, invoices, then compress the data file. If you do this, make sure you've got archives with all this in before you delete it.
