Problems with converting after 2020.2 update

SOLVED

Hi,

I installed the 2020.2 update and converted 2 company files without issue. The 3rd one will not open, however. I had it open right before updating. When I try to open it, I am prompted to convert the file, then an error message pops up saying Sage can't open the company file.

I opted to back-up the files before converting, but there is only SAI files with the SAJ folders. When I try to select a back-up, it won't let me select those, only CAB files. I looked for previous back-up files - there are only the SAI/SAJs... no CAB files at all since 2018!

I also tried to run from the "back-up", but come up with the same error.

Please help!

Thank you

Are you looking for your backup *.cab files to restore in this location?

    SUGGESTED

    Hi ,

Thanks for reaching out! Here's a snippet from a blog called Part 2 of 2: Sage 50 CA Data Conversion Tips

When you launch Sage 50, right click the Sage 50 icon and select "run as administrator." This should launch a welcome screen similar to the one below. Depending on your backup format. If your backup file extension is .CAB select “Restore from backup”. OR If your backup folder has a .SAI file and .SAJ sub-folder with matching names choose the “select an existing company” option to locate the backup manually. Alternatively, if you have a sample company file open, then these options below are also available via the File menu.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Richard,

Yes, I am looking for the *.cab files. In that folder, there's only copies of the company SAI and SAJ files, with "_bak_[date]" attached to the file name. There is one other folder named BAK_5718 that has dump files in it. There hasn't been a *.cab file in the backup folder since 2018. Of course this is the first time I've looked for quite a while.

    Hi Erzsi,

Opening Sage 50 as an administrator and opening the SAI/SAJ backup still resulted in getting the error message. Thank you for the suggestion.

Sorry, there is another Backups folder in Public Documents that contains *.cab files on occasion.  I should have looked more carefully before I posted.

The files in the user My Documents I mentioned above should be able to be copied back to another location and renamed and opened in your older version.

    Hi Richard,

Alas, there was only sample company data in the Public\Simply Accounting folder. It was worth a shot!

Copying the SAI/SAJ files and trying to open from that was one of the things I tried before posting. I have a backup from immediately before updating Sage 50. It still can't open, I'm afraid.

Sorry but I don't think anyone will be able to help much more without either knowing what the error message is or being able to see the file directly.

The messages are important to help diagnose the problem and to be able to search the Knowledgebase for help.

The only easily seen issue that I can think of that will prevent the file from upgrading is that you may have a file(s) that do not belong in the *.saj folder.  People will store files in the *.saj folder for various reasons but they should not be doing that.  I've found lots of files that shouldn't belong in the database folder in the past.

Upgrading from 2020.1 to 2020.2 as I have assumed you are doing, does not require a huge database change but if your upgrade was from before 2020.1 then there may be a database change large enough to have extra files cause problems with the upgrade.

What I am thinking about is that two files upgraded properly so the program must be installed correctly.  Therefore the third file that does not upgrade properly must have a problem of some sort.  The fact that you can't go back to a previous backup (did you try a backup from a day before you did the upgrade?) of any kind and have it upgrade, leads me to believe the problem is with the file.

Most people are having problems with Sage Drive issues.  You haven't mentioned if you were using Sage Drive with this file or not.  However, that might be a cause on this particular file if sharing did not stop properly before you upgraded.

You mentioned this file was open before the upgrade but I don't know if that means you were closing it when you got the message the update was available and then you just allowed the update to happen right then.  I personally NEVER do this.  I always make sure files are closed, backups are taken in the currently used version and all files are closed, I count to 30 before I do anything else to make sure the file is completely closed, then I reboot my computer and go to the download location and install by running the download.

Having the exact same issue here.  Have updated multiple companies with no issues but have one that errors and says can't open the company file.

I've tried all the same things Jenn J has listed as well as Erzsi suggestion with the same result.

    Hi Richard,

Unfortunately there is no error number. It only says "Unable to open company file".

I did have the specific file open, and saw the mail notification that there was an update available. I made a backup and closed the program, which then prompted me to install the update.

The really weird thing was after the installation... Sage 50 first converted a different company file from the one I was on before the update.

That one opened fine, so I closed it and attempted to open the one I had been working on initially. It asked me to log in, then prompted me to convert the file, at which time it made another back-up, then the message: "Unable to open company file" came up.

EDIT: Yes, I am using Sage Drive. We've had it pretty much since it became available. Normally when that would happen, I would re-download the shared file. That's not working either.

Something else that's just occurred to me... I'm not being prompted to sign in to Sage Drive when attempting to open the problem file. I am with the other two, though.

I have never seen the program convert a file that a user didn't specifically select, so I don't know why it converted one first that you didn't want converted.

I don't use Sage Drive myself but my understanding is that you have to unshare before you do any upgrade.  If that didn't happen properly, you may need tech support to help you sort it out.  I've never had to repair files that used Sage Drive so i don't know what might have gone wrong.

I checked out some Knowledgebase articles for

    "Unable to open company file".

In article 28079 the only options that might be applicable are Option 2 that Erzsi mentioned below and Option 5 that I mentioned above.  It also mentions restoring from a backup but I didn't get an answer whether you have restored from a previous backup so I don't know if that worked or not either.

There is a new article from the other day #105575 that might be what you need.

I had the same "Can't open the company file" after converting the company file on my computer. My client has Sage 50 CA Premium Accounting Release (2020.2) on their laptop. I have Sage 50 CA  Accountant Edition (Release 2020.2) on my computer. They have 4 company files, 2 of which I was able to open with no issues, the other 2 gave me the "Can't open the company file". I tried, unsuccessfully, working from backup files and opening Sage in Administrator mode on my computer.

This is what I did to open the files with no problems, after reading somewhere in here that the SAJ folder may have some unwanted or corrupt files in it:

On the clients laptop I saved the files with a new name in a different folder.

I then copied the newly named .SAI files and it's corresponding .SAJ folder onto a USB drive and then copied these files/folders onto my computer.

I was able to open the new files with no issues.

    Oh my goodness it worked!!!!!

It happened again - one of the other files I work with said "Data File Missing". It still worked for that file and the one that originally wouldn't open.

KR Smith, you are amazing! I can't thank you enough :)
