Thank you for taking the time to reply but i've tried all suggestions on the article. Only thing that works is restoring a backup file into the new version, problem is we don't have recent backups and the live version of the database won't convert with an error message that it cannot open it at the end..

This may be a stupid question, but why can a new backup not be taken from the live data on the Windows XP machine? 

Regardless, if you are attempting to upgrade to Sage 2016 from the 2010 Simply Accounting, you will need to update to the 2015 version before you can move to 2016 as an update utility was removed from the current offering. You should be able to find a download link to Sage 2015  in the following location:

Try installing 2015 as a trial version and opening the data file. If you can get it open in 2015 then you should be able to move to 2016 with no problem.

Thanks for your response but i get the same error with 2015, i can only update a backup file but not the live database..(not sure if this has anything to do with it but 2008 database was worked on in xp 32bit and now am running in win 10 64 bit)
