Warning: Updating to Sage X3 V12 2021 R1, R2, R3 and R4 with Microsoft SQL Server

"The releases above include new definitions of clustered indexes for SQL Server, to be created when the update is applied. The data indexed in a clustered index is stored in the index area of SQL Server. As a result, this might move data in your database from the SQL Server data storage area to the index storage area.

If during folder creation (or import) time, use of filegroups option was chosen (default in X3 supervisor since 2021R1), two folder-specific filegroups for Data storage and Index storage were created.

During the update, data storage for the new clustered indexes will be moved from the Data filegroup to the Index filegroup. In consequence the file(s) in the Index filegroup will grow while the file(s) in the Data filegroup will NOT shrink automatically (shrinking may be done later by an SQL Server maintenance task). If there is not enough space for growing the Index filegroup, the installation of the update will fail with "out of disk space" errors. Also pay attention to the size and location file(s) for your SQL Server database log and your SQL Server instance tempdb. Rebuilding big indexes WILL use tempdb and log file space, and they must be able to grow as needed. If not, the update will fail with similar “out of disk space” errors.

Please make sure you perform a complete backup of the Sage X3 solution as well as the associated SQL Server database before you apply the update in order to restart the procedure in case of failure. For your information, Clustered indexes can be deactivated in the table dictionary.

Tables that benefit from clustered indexes by default are listed in the technical documents related to the Releases the indexes are delivered in."
