Maternity Leave and UIF contributions

Hi

An employee will be going on maternity leave for 4 months from 1 June.

She will be unpaid for 3 months, and then paid 50% for the 4th month.

1. Do I terminate her on Payroll dated 31 May 2022 with reason maternity leave and then re-instate her in September to pay her 50%  ?

2. Does she need to contribute to UIF for the first 3 months when she is receiving R 0 salary? I am thinking NO she doesn't pay, but a colleague is of a different opinion, so I need to be clear

Thank you

    Good day Sheila

    Thank you for your post

When an employee goes on maternity leave they are not leaving their employment but on leave for a certain period . If the employee was employed since March 2022 - to February 2023 , that is 12 months of periods worked.

This employee was not paid by the employer for the period of maternity leave and not laid--off from her employment.

The periods worked would show as 12, unlike, if the employee started employ in June 2023 which 9 months of periods worked.
