Maternity Leave and UIF contributions

Hi

An employee will be going on maternity leave for 4 months from 1 June.

She will be unpaid for 3 months, and then paid 50% for the 4th month.

1. Do I terminate her on Payroll dated 31 May 2022 with reason maternity leave and then re-instate her in September to pay her 50%  ?

2. Does she need to contribute to UIF for the first 3 months when she is receiving R 0 salary? I am thinking NO she doesn't pay, but a colleague is of a different opinion, so I need to be clear

Thank you

    Good day Shellsg

    Thank you for your post,

The employee will need to be terminated if they will not be getting paid and only reinstated employee when they are to get paid 50% of their salary. The employee is suppose to claim UIF benefits while on maternity, so there would be no UIF contribution while they are not getting paid.

We would also suggest that you contact UIF to verify that information.

Maternity Leave - Employee doesn't get paid

Maternity Leave - If the company pays the employees

    Hi Siphiwe

The employee is returning to work this month

The pay period on Payroll was the month she left - May 2022 - Period 3

Now when I ran a Pay Period Update it went straight to Year End

    What to do??

    Good day Shellsg

    Thank you for your post

Pastel payroll will revert to year-end on a pay period update ,if all employees in that company are terminated. If this is the only employee in that company, then you will need to restore a backup prior to you terminating this employee and process a zero payslip from May to September when you have to pay them the 50%

    Hi Siphiwe

Thanks for the advice - BUT then the IRP5 is going to show 12 periods worked instead of 9 periods (12 less 3 months maternity)
    Won't that be a problem?

    Good day Sheila

    Thank you for your post

When an employee goes on maternity leave they are not leaving their employment but on leave for a certain period . If the employee was employed since March 2022 - to February 2023 , that is 12 months of periods worked.

This employee was not paid by the employer for the period of maternity leave and not laid--off from her employment.

The periods worked would show as 12, unlike, if the employee started employ in June 2023 which 9 months of periods worked.
