"The Value supplied is not valid for Customer Reference"

SOLVED

I'm attempting to migrate 25 years of Quickbooks info to Sage.  I've successfully migrated Chart of Accounts, Customers, and Vendors, I know how to format the .csv files.  However, when attempting to import sales, I get a persistent error regarding column B "Customer Reference":  "The Value supplied is not valid for Customer Reference".  I downloaded the example .csv file and tried importing that - Sage doesn't even like its own example!  I checked the column formatting (it was set to number, I tried changing it to 'text', but it made no difference).

Is anyone else seeing this?  Any ideas?  I'm using Firefox on a mac, I'm editing the .csv files in NeoOffice (though I've tried it in Numbers as well, just in case it made a difference - it didn't).

Thanks.

The Customer Reference must be in the customer record. Open one of the imported customer records,

    1. Click Contacts
    2. Customers, and double click one of the Customer
    3. Click Options tab
    4. Locate…
