2012 Timeslips in peer to peer environment. The total 3 computers , one is the "server". How to replace the "server" pc in this situation?

2012 Timeslips in peer to peer environment. The total 3 computers , one is the "server". I have replaced the 2 other computers with Windows 10 and now is the time to replace the "server". What would be the best way to approach it. When replacing the other 2 computers i used the local install from the "server" pc but I am not fully sure how to go about the replacing the main pc. I found some links but not quite sure if I would install the Timeslips from CD on the new "server" pc and then repoint the other computers to this new "server" .

Thank you for any directions on this.

Randy

  • First, be prepared that Timeslips 2012 may not work on windows 10. Just because it works on the workstations, doesn't mean it will work on the "server". Timeslips 2012 was not supported on Windows 10 and I have seen issues.

You will need your reinstallation codes and your installation media along with the service releases as none of this can be downloaded from Sage. Then you will install on the "server" using your reinstallation codes. Install the service releases. If you will be running Timeslips on the "server" do a local installation on the server so that all computers can use similar pathing. Then point the workstations to the server computer.

Hi and thank you for your response Caren2.

I have the cd and all the codes. What I am trying to find out is that am I to install from CD on the new "server" computer and then clear licenses and repoint ( or reinstall even ) on the other 2 workstations that are now pointing to the old Windows 7 "server"? I found this link as few others: View Document - Sage Knowledgebase

This is just one of the things from this article:

    For Timeslips 2016 and older:

Section I: Move the application to the new machine

    1. Copy the current Timeslips installation folder from the old server and paste it into a folder on the new server that is properly shared for the client installations to access
    2. Rename the TIMESLIP.CFG on the old server to oldTIMESLIP.CFG to break the connection between the clients and the old server
    3. Open Station Administrator on any machine, locate the TIMESLIP.CFG on the new server and Clear All licenses. See Article ID 13618: 'ERROR: "There are not enough licenses to allow use of the program at this time"'
    4. All clients will search for the TIMESLIP.CFG and need to be directed to the new server install to reconnect

Is this what I should follow?

    Thank you.

You can do that or you can do the full installation. I generally prefer a clean install because I find that clients often have a lot of "garbage" in their folder and I don't like moving that but either process will work.

Caren2 thank you again for getting back to me.

I guess I am just a little bit of unease since the client does not have support and it will come down to me making sure it works.

So this example shows how to move the installation folder to the new "server" but it does not say anything about installing new instance of the software on the new "server".

It seems like what I am asking is to just make sure I got the steps correctly.

    1. Once i have new " server" setup with shares and firewall exceptions what do I do next?

    2. Am I to install the software from CD at this point?

    3. After this installation , i clear the licenses

    4. Repoint the 2 computers back to new server/installation folder?

    5. test the access to database

Am I putting this correctly? Just again not sure about the step 2 .

Thank you  very much for your assistance.

Regardless of what you do there is no guarantee it will work. You are running an unsupported version in an unsupported environment. Once you have moved the software if you want to install do NOT use the cd, you use the setup.exe in the loclinst folder on the server.

    HI Caren2

Sorry to bother you again but would you be able to tell me once again if all my steps are correct. I really appreciate your help.

    1. New computer , I set all the shares and make sure I can access them fine from the other 2 computers. Also open the firewall for the specific port for Timeslips.
    2. I will copy all the TimeSlips folders , including the database to the new “server” computer
    1. Rename the TIMESLIP.CFG on the old server to oldTIMESLIP.CFG to break the connection between the clients and the old server
    1. Open Station Administrator on any machine, locate the TIMESLIP.CFG on the new server and Clear All licenses. See Article ID 13618: 'ERROR: "There are not enough licenses to allow use of the program at this time"
    1. At this point I should be able to access/open TimeSlips from the 2 computers?

Once again apologize for bothering you but just want to make sure I did not miss any steps.

    Once again thank you.

In theory that should work. Remember that Timeslips 2012 may not work on windows 10 as "server". If the server also runs Timeslips you will need to do a local install using the same path to the cfg file that will be used on the workstation. If you need further help please reach out to me directly and we can discuss some billable assistance.
