Confused about Year End + Payroll Updates for v20.5.X - Do I need to upgrade to v22.2U1 before 1/1/2023???

I have read a lot of the posts on this forum, and all this said I'm personally new to dealing with Sage. I'm the new IT person for a construction firm and they're currently running v20.5.1,21.  (by new IT guy I mean I just took over their IT about a month ago).  I chatted with a Sage support rep who told me I will "need to install the Year end software version which has not been released yet. We expect that released around the end of Dec, you will need that installed in order to generate those year-end tax forms."

But then in this thread, someone named April Dahl notes: "If you do not need the changes/fixes in 22.2 and/or 22.2 Update 1 (releasing later today), then 20.5 should be ok (and at the very least it would have to be 20.5 because of the government changes from last year). However, be aware that if you encounter any problems with 20.5, then you will need to upgrade to 22.2."  There's also an official announcement thread that states "For 2022 year-end processing, the Sage 300 CRE supported version will be 22.2. We will not have a year-end specific update."

So, I'm leaning on NOT updating/upgrading to v22.2 (Update 1), if I can help it.  But then I'm thrown a curveball. In that same announcement, it is stated "The Payroll tax update with new 2023 tax rates will be released near the end of December for US and Canada. You must apply the tax update before processing checks for 2023."

Now the question: Will this payroll tax update also be available for users of 20.5.X or only for folks running 22.2 update 1?  Because if it's not going to be available for v20.5.x users, then we have to upgrade/update to 22.2 before the business can cut any payroll checks in the first week of January 2023.

What am I missing?  Am I confused for no reason?  Should I just bite the bullet and work whatever hours are necessary to do this update/upgrade as soon as possible and risk downtime for the client right before/during the holidays?  PLEASE HELP!
