Unprintable characters found

Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate v20.3

After running “File Doctor” we notice several errors. I found the client record with the unprintable characters error and manually replaced the text without any special characters. A re-run of “File Doctor” produced the same error plus a few new ones. Can these errors be safely ignored? If not what steps should we take to fix them?

Thank you

  • In the example above it looks like the unprintable characters are not in "Key" fields and athat file doctor is not flagging the file as corrupt as a result of the unprintable characters. . Depending on where the unprintable characters are found (record and field) and whether 'Fix and compact bad files' was checked, what File Doctor does about the unprintable characters determines if this is an error to be concerned about or not. Generally unprintable characters occur when data was copied from another application or program and pasted into the field where it was found.

If the unprintable characters are found in a primary key field, then File Doctor may either strip the character from the field or it may delete the record entirely. If this happens, you may need to restore to backup and then a file fix will be need to be done before File Doctor can be run on the affected file(s) again. In some cases, a file fix can be done without needing to restore.

IMPORTANT: Before deciding how to proceed It is important to have the File Doctor journal reviewed by Sage Customer Support.
