1099 Select the States you wish to file

We are an Ohio Contractor with the bulk of our 1099's going to Ohio Vendors.  There are a few vendors from other states.  When I get to the "select the states you wish to file", only MI, NC and MO appear here.  Is this because these are the only states requiring this filing?  I've been trying to confirm if Ohio is required or not.  Does anyone know for sure if a state is not listed in this box it is not required? Googling isn't helping.  I can find information for both yes and no.  If it's required, is there something I need to do to make it show up in the list?

Hi Robyn, It's best to check with your tax consultant/adviser or the State Agency to determine if you are required to file 1099s with the each state. The requirements vary based on different factors such as: The state of the PAYER (your company), the state of the PAYEE (the vendor) and whether or not you withheld state income tax from the payment to the PAYEE (vendor)

Additional information: We are currently researching questions related to the FILING STATE that prefills the 1099 preparer grid in Aatrix. It is currently prefilling with the PAYEE's state, where some of our customers have indicated that this column should prefill with the state of the PAYER.  We should have further information sometime this week.

Thanks.  But I wasn't really looking for tax advice.  My question was about the programming.  In particular why some states show on the "FILING STATE" and others do not?  So it's a question about programming logic.  We are issuing 1099's to a lot of Vendors located in Ohio (we are in Ohio).  However Ohio does not show up on the list of "FILING STATES" for me.  It shows MI, NC and MO.  I do have at least one vendor with addresses in these states.  But there are also vendors in TX and FL and those states do not show on the "FILING STATES" either.  So what is the criteria that says show MI, NC and MO but don't show OH, FL, or TX.  That's my question.

TX and FL do not have any filing requirements for the 1099 so that is why they don't show. MI, NC, and MO may have filing requirements (I don't know for sure) but if they do, that is why they show.

That doesn't help to explain why Ohio isn't showing though.

    Hi Robyn,

Is this in the window to add State & Local Tax Items?

No.  This is one of windows that comes up after you have verified all information in the grid and are almost ready to finish.  As far as the "State & Local Tax Items" window, I tried adding our Ohio account to this window.  When I did, I saw 2 columns for Ohio withholding and gross (I think) show up in the grid.  But there is no information that belongs in these columns because we did not withhold taxes.  This still did not make Ohio show up in the "SELECT THE STATES YOU WISH TO FILE" window.  It had no effect.

Gotcha. If you did not enter any amounts in the boxes (taxable amount, tax withheld) for OH in the Preparer grid, then OH will not show up in the list of "Select the states you wish to file".
