If there is one payroll company (like a master payroll) and you have a shared GL/JC for the legal entities, the payroll will post to the various expense accounts in those entities.  When you post the payroll, since the cash is coming out of only one company, the system will then create intercompany entries for what the other companies would owe. Obviously, this requires some very specific setup to make work.
