Hi Deborah. This function only works at the time you are entering the hours, it will not change the pay type in any lines that have already been entered. You should also note that when you enable the new 40 hours/week OT function, it disables the previously available automatic OT for exceeding 8 hours for a single day. You basically have to choose which function to use as the program cannot do both.

I have never used the auto OT over 8 hours function.    I enter hours in daily payroll, then, when the week is over, I create a payroll record from that.  I enter the hours every day, so i do not know until the end of the week if there is overtime (over 40 hours) or not. 

That function does not work with Daily Payroll, only with manual time entry directly in 5-2-2.

Can you tell me how to set this up in 5-2-2? Thank you,

First, you must be on version 24.2.103. In 5-2-2, go to Options, then enable 'Default Overtime Over 40 Hours Per Week'. Then when you are entering timecard lines, if the total for the week is at above 40 hours, the Pay Type on the next line will default to Overtime. With the feature disabled, this will only happen if you a second line for the same day and that day already has 8 or more hours on a previous line. Please note that that neither feature is retroactive for existing timecard lines (will not change the Pay Type if you change the number of hours) - it only works while entering in a new timecard line.

Circling back to this  . . . what if the over 40 occurs within the day that gets you to 40; for instance a person works 10 hours each day Mon - Wed and then on Thurs works 12, thereby giving him 2 hour OT. It seems when I tried it that it will take the 12 hours at straight time, so it's as if the feature only works if all the overtime was on a separate day from the first 40 hours. Am I missing something on this?

It will only default to Overtime if the previously entered timecard lines total 40 or more hours at the time you are entering the new line. So in your example, you have to enter 1 line for 10 hours (defaults to Regular), and a second line for 2 hours, which will then default to Overtime.
