Moving to hosted solution for 100 Contractor. Has anyone use Swizznet, or can you recommend other solutions?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site/forum.  I recently took over IT for a company that is using 100 Contractor installed on site.  We must upgrade to the newest SQL based version, but don't currently have the server capacity to meet minimum requirements.  For this and a number of other reasons, we've decided to go with a hosted solution.  Several months prior to my arrival a quote was obtained from a Sage hosting company called Swizznet.  I don't know much about them yet, except that they are fairly local to us.  For 10 users and 50GB storage, the monthly rate is $770.

For whatever reason, despite the prior IT admin informing the CFO and others of the situation, no due diligence was performed to narrow down and vet options for hosting.  I've been in this job barely a month and this is now at an urgent status.  So I'm inclined to just go with Swizznet and hope it goes well.  But of course, I should at least ask around a bit.

Does anyone have good insights or pointers regarding the pro/cons and trade-offs of a hosted solution vs. on premise?  One thing I've read is that administrative access requires RDP, at least with one provider.

And it turns out I don't know what is the best category for this discussion...I guess conversion?

Thanks for your help on this,

Brad S.

We use Swizznet for hosting, but we only have 2 licenses, but the costs are on par with what you've mentioned.  They were recommended by our Sage Reseller.  It uses Citrix Receiver to connect to the server.  It all works pretty well.  They're support has always been pretty good, and not having been an IT Admin, I've had to fumble my way through it a bit and get their help from time to time.  Ask them for step-by-step upgrade instructions, you'll also need a few other instructions, which are in their support section, like how to make a desktop icon, add a user, etc.  I think overall, for us it works, but if I had that many users, I might be looking in the other direction to save money on the recurring costs.

    Hello Brad,

From the Sage 100 Contractor side of things, please make sure that you have access to Database Administration (installed at server level) to perform tasks such as manual backups and restores, nightly maintenance, archiving (GL & PR), and tasks performed by technical support (if needed). These aren't everyday tasks but when needed, they are needed without a delay.

I'm sure Swizznet has probably heard of this before but for you, since you are newer to the program, it would be a great question to ask them.

    • How do I access Database Administration to perform these tasks?
    • Where are the nightly backups stored?  Access?

You can read about the Database Administration tool here: http://cdn.na.sage.com/docs/en/customer/100contractor/20_7US/open/DatabaseAndCompanyAdministrationGuide.pdf

I have a lot of customers that use ServerNova for hosting Sage 100 Contractor. They have a pretty good knowledge and ability to help with Sage 100 Contractor IT issues. http://servernova.net/

Alternatively, Trapp hosts Sage 100 Contractor as well. I personally prefer working with ServerNova, but Trapp works really well too. http://trapptechnology.com/

    Hello Brad,

I wanted to follow up and introduce myself. My name is Holly Singer and I’m the Director of Client Success at Swizznet. I understand you were posting in an effort to get some real feedback and end user experiences and were not looking for a marketing free-for all. Since you mentioned us by name I did want to reach out and introduce myself.

It is important to do your due diligence on any hosting provider and find the provider that is fast, secure, reliable and the best fit for your company’s unique needs and budget. We have a great webinar that reviews the benefits of using a hosting provider for Sage vs going on-premise that might be helpful. In addition, we have some materials that review the costs of on-premise vs a hosted solution and how we compare to other providers. If you have some time, I’d also be happy to schedule a one-on-one demo so you can get a first-hand look at the solution and answer any questions you might have.

In terms of actual customer feedback, we have a number of Sage customer and partner testimonials on our website (bottom of each of our Sage hosting pages) that you might find helpful.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help as you’re working through this evaluation process.

    Kind Regards,

    Holly Singer
