BW 4.0

SUGGESTED

Hi - I know this is a long shot....my wife keeps our small co books in BW 4.0 running on XP Pro. PC got fried.  Backups were going to a flash drive but after reinstalling 4.0 on another XP machine and attempting to restore a backup - BW is looking for a zip file and the saved files are a winrar with a .001 extension. I've found how to unpack those using 7-zip but still don't see a file I can open/restore. Is BW supposed to somehow natively recognize this .001 extension? - obviously I am missing something. If anyone can help I would sure appreciate it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply -Coleen - we have all these different install discs including F9 & Version 3.03 - is it possible we were running 3.03 to get that .001 backup? There are no other backups anywhere.

I found a 12.03 CD - can't believe we have 2 or 3 newer installs and are running this - but you would know - thank you.

    Jeff-

I would still be concerned about the data and the versions you are using.  If it is .001 backup and you were on v4.0, then that is probably not a current back up or your data.  I would also have concerns with the 12.03 CD.  12.03 is a very old version, that could be going back to the early 1990’s.  I believe in 1999 the program was V12.96 that was 20+ years ago.  If it is like our currently versions, data backups are not backward compatible to older versions, so you may not even be able to restore your .001 backup in to the v12.03.

If you still have access to the directories from your computer, you may want to look for a AB.ZIP file in your data directory (generally….\BWData )  You can look to see is there is a backup that may have been created if you upgraded from V3.0 to V4.0.  The system may have done an automatic backup “AB”, when upgrading to your V4.0.  Look for a file like: SAMPLE_01-01-2000_AB.ZIP.   (Where “SAMPLE” = the company name and “01-01-2000” =  date it was performed)

Unfortunately, we are going to be very limited in troubleshooting or offering advice for a version that we have not supported in over 20 years.

Coleen - I must have been mistaken and we have been running Ver 12 - all this time. Only backups are .001 ext. I've reinstalled ver 12 and it is asking for registration or it will disable in 30 days but in meantime we were able to restore the company - thanks for your help - my wife will look at Sage 50 and other options to find something we can run on Win10 and avoid all this drama - thanks for your help - you have been very kind.

Wow,  you dodged a big bullet.  Think about a better backup and restore process and testing. (off site copies too).

And this made me think, what I have in my archives. I have a large NAS with RAID 5 and we don't delete much now as storage is cheap.

I found, I have installs and many SPs for:

    BW 2011

    Bw 2012

    BW 2013

    BW 2015

    BW 2017

    BW 2020

Thank you for your reply - yes big bullet dodged - it gets even better in that we can even print without the use of CutePdf or Ghostwriter - so we got lucky. Registration even worked.  Thank you again to you both. Current versions of BW are just overkill for our little business - but my wife has used it for so long and is so comfortable with it that we've found workarounds to keep it viable.  And I might just go out and buy 2 refurbed XP Home machines, shrink wrap em and put em away for next time. The big issue (as I vaguely recall) has always been any moderately priced alternatives don't offer the kind of chart of accounts flexibility or reporting formatting that my wife wants - so we've kept it going.  We'll just chalk this one up to Coleen's divine intervention as to what we were really running vs what I thought. I've got good notes now for when the next motherboard fries.

I glad you were able to get your system back.  This is probably a good time to mention our articles from our Knowledge Base. Although they are written for our current version, it still gives you good advice on how to prepare ahead of time.
