California Sick Pay Formula

SUGGESTED

I need to create a formula for the new mandatory California Sick Pay Law.

The employee needs to accrue 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.  How do I do this in Sage 50?

They can accrue up to 6 days a year (48 hours).  They are allowed to take 3 days (24 hours ) per year.  how to best calculate and track this?

Sage 50's sick accrual formulas are designed to prorate a standard number of hours over the number of pay periods in a year. You could probably use the payroll settings wizard (Maintain > Default Settings > Payroll Settings > Benefits) to set up a sick time policy that complied with the rules. But unless everybody works the same number of hours, you would end up letting some employees accrue at a rate faster than 1 hr per 30 hours worked, to make sure you met the minimum requirements for everyone.

A better solution would be to customize the sick accrual formula so it is based on actual hours worked. That is a little too complex to address here. But the key is that the names of your hourly pay types can be used in a formula, so something like A=Regular+Overtime could give you the total hours worked which you can then multiply by the appropriate rate.

With either method, there is no way to limit someone to taking only 24 hours of sick time per year. You can set a cap on hours accrued, but not hours taken.
