I went back and edited the journal entry so that I was crediting the account that I was taking the money from and debiting the account that I was transferring the money to. This fixed the problem but is this normal accounting practice?

Go to Options Tab.   Go to Global   Turn on 2 line display.  You will now see if you are increasing or decreasing the account.  I think that Sage 50 feature  will help you a lot.

Yes, this is normal. In Accounting to increase a cash accounts balance a debit is entered. This is what will happen when deposits and receipts are entered. To reduce a cash accounts balance a credit is entered. The cash account balance will be reduced on withdrawels or checks. In Accounting you'll need to think the opposite of how cash posts in comparison to your actual bank account.
