You could make the semi-finished piece that goes out for plating to be a 'sub-assembly', which better represents this as work-in-process, then create another finished assembly that rolls another non-inventory labor component into it when it comes back in-house.

Thanks Scott! This is actually what we have going on right now (the sub assembly etc.). I guess that leaves me with the question of how do you roll a non-inventory labor component cost into it when it comes back? 

You're welcome.  You can create an item in Sage with an Item Class of 'labor'.  You can add this item to your final assembly along with your externally processed sub-assembly.  It doesn't have to be a labor component.  Building assemblies for this item just becomes a two-step process rather than one.

Could you assemble the item & send it out for plating, then created the assembly when it comes back into stock?    You could track these with a Sales Order for the plating.
