All on board: Getting to know Workstation Setup

2 minute read time.

In the latest of our “Getting to know” you series, we turn the spotlight on Workstation Setup in Sage 300 ERP.

Of course, the workstation is defined as a computer that connects to a server to access Sage 300 ERP.

From our Installation Guide, the Workstation Setup utility is a component of the System Manager installation. It installs the components that a workstation requires to run System Manager and accounting modules on a server. You must run Workstation Setup on each workstation that will run Sage 300 ERP programs from a server, including programs opened through the Sage 300 ERP Portal.

Run Workstation Setup

Here are the steps to run Workstation Setup:

  1. Make sure you have both Local Windows Administrator rights.
  2. Go to your Sage 300 ERP installation directory.
  3. Locate and open the WSSetup folder.
  4. Double-click the setup.exe, to run the workstation setup wizard.
  5. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard.

Troubleshooting

Here are some issues that you may run into when it comes to Workstation Setup.

Progress bar hangs when opening any UI

After installing Workstation Setup on a computer, you find that none of the options open in Sage 300 ERP. You will see the progress bar keeps showing and hangs up. To end the progress bar, you have to end the A4WContainer in Task Manager. To resolve this error, uninstall the Sage 300 ERP Workstation setup, restart your computer and then reinstall Workstation setup using WSSetup.exe.

Network resources are unavailable

If you are running Sage 300 ERP Workstation Setup on a client’s computer then you may see the following message:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'sqlncli.msi' in the box below."

While we here are Sage don’t provide assistance to third party products or enhancements, etc…, we do recommend that you add the Microsoft SQL Server native client 10 and re-creating the odbc dsn connection on the client computer to resolve this issue.

Error 1327

If you are using Sage 300 ERP 2014, then you may come across the following error when running Workstation Setup:

"Error 1327. Invalid Drive X:\"

Lower the UAC (user Account Control) setting on the client computer to resolve this issue.

  • Then on the workstation you browse to \\server\Sage300\wssetup and run setup.exe (use Run As Administrator). On the workstation install screens the paths will be \\server\Sage300 for Programs and Shared Data if you keep it simple and in one share. If you want to make your life difficult then you can have Shared Data on a different share. You can control read/write or read only access to the folders on a single share just as easily as one two shares, so I don't see the need for two shares.

  • Basically you install Sage 300 on the server, say in a C:\Sage300 folder, then share the C:\Sage300 folder as Sage300.

  • How about fleshing out the Workstation installation process in the install documentation?  It is so vague.   It took me quite a while to understand that the file path you use during setup is the path to the programs on the server.  It would only take 5 minutes for someone to add a step by step process for using it.
