Sage 300 Performance over LAN, WAN, and VPN

SUGGESTED

I've seen a lot of discussion about Sage 300 performance on a LAN vs WAN vs VPN. We have traditionally run Sage 300 over a LAN with clients, server, and database all on the same network (client machines using 1Gbps network adapters).  When the pandemic hit and every one moved home, we kept the Sage 300 users performance the same by using Remote Desktop.  However, we are moving away from Remote Desktop and letting the users have their client machines at home, connecting back to the office over the internet.  We have already tried using VPN software to connect the client back to the office and performance has dropped dramatically. We are considering getting rid of the VPN and just trying to connect over the internet (no encryption) just to rule out the VPN software itself (is it the encryption that causes the performance issues, or is it simply the internet bandwidth itself).

Does Sage have an official statement about network speed/requirements?  Is 1GB required?  or would Sage 300 work fine over 100Mbps?  Because our office has a 500 Mbps pipe (both up and down) and at least one user has 1GB internet at their house.  So it seems like the network speed would be sufficient still.

I'm looking for something specific from Sage to say "this isnt supported" or "this should work".  Not just perspectives. Actual solid requirements over what is needed to get acceptable performance from Sage 300.

Forget about it, Sage 300 is a fat client.

Running fat clients over the internet will never give you an enjoyable experience.

    SageServer->Switches->Firewall->VPNEndPoint->Router->CorpISP->YourISP->YourRouter->YourFireWall->YourAnitVirusSoftware->

So the path from Sage to you is a bit complex, each time you move from one part of the path to the next it slows down.

Also consider that the upload speed for most homes is going to be a fraction of the download speed.

I didn't even put in all the hops it will make once it hits the internet DNS servers or the fact that no matter how fast all the pieces are it will still run at the speed of the slowest piece in the puzzle, so if Joe is at home trying to run Sage, but his laptop is connected to a 2.4gz WiFi that is maxing out at 54mb then thats what its all running at.

And Sage is a 32bit app (aka very old and never converted to 64bit) that runs sluggish on most any kind of hardware, even the database is 32bit.

Sage will tell you to do all kinds of stuff about how to speed up their software, I say they need to look at why their software is so slow.

Sage 300 is ineffective over VPN

    Remote choices:

    - Remote desktop such as Window RD or Citrix, etc

    or

    - Web client - now fully featured and stable

    or

    - specific module remote solutions :
eg the Purchase Workflow approvals app (PT-Go) on smartphones or their web client.
