Expanded Customer Number

We have a client that has one company that would like to use the Expanded Customer Number, but they have another company that doesn't need the Expanded Customer Number.  They set up the first company with the box checked.  Now they are trying to set up the next company that doesn't need it and the option is not there.  Sage Support says that once the Expanded Customer Number feature is turned on in one company, it is set for the entire system.  This doesn't make sense!!  You can't see the option in either company if you look at AR Setup Options.  

Has anyone else run into this issue?
