De-Activation of Avalara - Land mines?

Has anyone else de-activated Avalara and is there anything in particular we need to watch out for?

We're planning to:

  • de-activate all companies via the Avatax Configuration Options
  • import our prior tax schedule codes to:
    • Customer File
    • Ship-To File
    • Sales Order files

Our brief experimentation with Avalara (Avatax) is coming to an end.  It was a disaster for us due to:

  • Avalara not understanding some of the intricacies of Louisiana sales taxes (parish level complications) with repair services that are shipped out of state.
  • Billing opacity leading to many, many more "transactions" than we were led to believe when we signed up.
  • Weakness of parish/county-level sales tax reports (we file ourselves, we didn't have Avalara do that part)
  • Avalara not able to handle some "direct pay" situations without creating "custom rules".
  • the constant "blame game" between Avalara and DSD (who coded the Sage integration based on Avalara's instructions and Avalara's unwillingness to authorize DSD to update the integration for obvious bugs and weaknesses) regarding who is responsible for what resulting in pretty awful experiences getting answers to many questions.

We were only using it for our sales order / invoices (not for AP/PO)

I don't think you will experience a problem by de-activating it for your company codes, and then replacing the tax schedule with local defined codes.  We have many clients that have Avalara AvaTax installed, and either have not started, or only use it in one company, not all.  I'm sorry Avalara was not able to meet your needs.
