2019 Timeslip Slow Backup Performance to network storage

Posted By FormerMember

Hello all,

Hoping for some guidance on an issue we are having. I am IT support for a client that is using the 2019 version of Timeslips. What we are experiencing is that backups to our network storage is taking 15 minutes or longer to complete. When we backup the database to the Local Drive it backs up the 510mb database in a few minutes as expected.

What makes me think it might be a program setting is that I can transfer that 510mb file to the network storage directly afterwards in less than 30 seconds as we are running gigabit speeds.

We have made exceptions in the Antivirus as per the knowledgebase suggests. Just wonding If this is something that is easily remedied.

Thanks for the help,

The nature of Timeslips versions based on Firebird SQL is such that backups to the designated server path are usually quite fast and backups anywhere else are slow. Recommend making backups to the default location and then you can use a batch file to copy the backup to another location.

Which of the two methods are you using to make this backup? The one at the top of the dialog, or the one at the bottom? There are two methods.  You did not mention which one you are using in your question.  It matters.

The one at the top is faster because you are essentially telling the Firebird SQL server to backup to itself at a default location.  As Caren has said, if you want it elsewhere, you could batch copy that folder to a second location.

If you are using the one at the bottom of the dialog, that can take quite a bit longer as you are essentially pulling data from the server, packaging it at the workstation and then putting the resulting file wherever.  All the checks need to be done to make sure you are getting the right information.
