Challenge Question (20200316) Topic: FTE

Question:  What is FTE?

Answer:  FTE is short for Full Time Equivalent.   This is sometimes referred to as WTE (whole time equivalent).  What does this mean?  It boils down to the number of units (FTE) or equivalent employees working full-time.  One FTE is equivalent to one employee working full-time.  Let's look at an example:

  •    Job of Senior Accounts Payable Clerk works 40 hours per week.  FTE = 1
  •    Job of Sales Representative works 20 hours per week.  FTE = .5
  •    Job of Accounts Receivable Clerk works 10 hours per week.  FTE = .25

In the workforce, an employee headcount can sometimes be deceiving.   You can have 1 Accounts Payable Clerk who works 40 hours per week, or 2 Sales people who work 20 hours per week, or 4 accounts receivable people who work 10 hours per week. The total number of hours worked in each job would be the same in all of these examples.  When a company employs a significant number of part-time staff, it can be useful to convert their hours worked into full time equivalents to see how many full-time staff it equates to.

In Sage HRMS, FTE is attached to a Job Code in Setup > (Codes) Employees > (Jobs) Codes.  Below is an example of a Sales Representative with a FTE of 0.5000

If you want to see a detailed headcount by job code, you can run the Statistics by Job Code Report (Reports > (Employees) Compensation Report).
