error: the customer - reference combination already exists

SOLVED

is there a way to bypass this error when entering a customer reference number on the product-customer tab?  I need to be able to enter the same code for multiple customers on the same product.  I cannot seem to find a setting anyplace.

    Hi- sorry I just saw your reply and i'm really in a pickle with this error.  It is looking for a value if I'm using the same customer on another product that doesn't have a customer product.   I want to be able to enter the same customer on multiple products without having to make an entry in the field.  I don't understand why this is a restriction.  I was hoping there was a parameter setting someplace that can turn it off.   this is just ridiculous living with this stupid error.  :-(   thanks for your help though.

    Hi Christine, the restriction comes from the index on the ITMBPC table which does not allow duplicates of the BPCNUM and ITMREFBPC fields.

    The reason for the index is some of the Sales functions, such as Sales Orders allow you to enter the line details using the Customer Product or, via the action button on the Product field performing a search of existing Customer Product codes.

    If the customer does not have their own reference for the product or it is not known, then the field should be populated with your product reference. Leaving the field blank would only work for one product customer reference (per customer), any other products for that customer with no reference would then be classed as a duplicate and so not allowed.
