Prevent duplicate entries on a sales order

Is it possible to prevent duplicate lines on a sales order? (duplication on Product (ITMREF)). Can you use control tables for this, and if yes how?

We got a modification created for this specific situation. We though allowed a check box on the product master in case we needed a duplicate line for a specific product in the future.
