What patch on U9 is your system?

What block on SOR1 screen did you add your field?

I just tested a normal text field , added at the end of block 1 on SOR1 screen and it does save correctly.

I put it in block 3. I've successfully added other fields to this screen, just not this one. It's the only local menu I have tried to add to this screen.

I just tried it quickly on U9 P6 and it works for me on block 3 and I am able to pick a value from local menu and save it and go back and the saved value shows up.
I suggest to open a case with your local support, so it can be looked at further.

Hi. We had the same issue a while back with custom fields on the SORDER. So remove the field you added from the table as well as the screen. Do a Window validation and re-add the fields and do a global validation again. Also if you have any SPE scripts, chech that you AFFZO the fields correctly. 

Some general advice:

make sure the field is named exactly the same in the table vs the screen

make sure the field is only existing in one screen of the OSOR window
