Automated Backup

SOLVED

I see there is an option for the Sage 50 automated backup, but not 300 CRE.

What are my options for an automated backup for the Sage 300 CRE data? Or maybe should I ask the more broad question of how does everybody handle backups. I am looking into using a Barracuda Backup box to backup my server that Sage is installed on. My question would be how does it handle backing up the database? I am under the assumption that you cannot just "drag and drop" to copy the company folder as some data may end up missing.

I was also told to run Sage on a virtual machine and take snapshots as well as running the Sage backup from within the software. Problem is that I would rather not have to run it every night after everybody is out of the system. Is this the job of a script or a 3rd party software that can back up a PSQL database?

You are correct; there is not a built-in option for an automated backup with Sage 300 CRE.

You can, and many customers do, use 3rd party products to backup their company data as well as their application data directory where some customization exists (On the server – C:\ProgramData\Sage\Timberline Office\9.5).

As far as support from Sage, we do not test with these other products and support would not be much help to you if you needed to restore the data because we do not know the backup product.  You may have been told by support to create a backup within the software because our support staff would be able to help with the restore process and could more easily validate what is in the backup. If you use a product that we are unfamiliar with, then you will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and integrity of those backups.

I will also note that we will also only support full backups of the data. Incremental backups are not an option either primarily due to the software creating and deleting files through normal processing.

You may want to review “What are the recommended backup procedures” (KB30819) and “Disaster recovery checklist for Sage 300 CRE” (KB227048)
