In Sage 500, there are what I call items and inventory items.  Items are things that you can place in a warehouse and things that you do not.  A widget might be placed into inventory, and a Service Call might be an item that you cannot.  Item maintenance stores attributes about the item that generally apply to the item regardless of warehousing.

To associate an item with a warehouse, use the Maintain Inventory application.  There you will specify the warehouse and item together.  When you do this, you can adjust attributes that are specific to that item in that specific warehouse.  The record may default some attributes from the item, and may can generally be overridden.  An attribute that might be specified here is a preferred bin, which is a bin in that warehouse to default to for that specific item.

The default warehouse on the item records is primarily used when the manufacturing module is being used, and is mainly tied to manufacturing usage.
