Manual Cheque Numbering?

Has anyone ever had a need to create a manual cheque number? For example, wanting to use a cheque that was used for a payment but wasn't actually in the printer at the time? I'd like to be able to take a cheque number like #00179 and modify it slightly to something like #00179.1 or #001749A or something like that.

Uncheck the Print Check box and enter the number.

I've done that in the past, and it works well as long as I still with a typical numbering system. But adding a "dash" or an alphabetical character after it gives me the message it's an invalid cheque number.

I'm wondering if there's something in setup that would allow for alphanumeric cheque numbering instead of just numeric numbering.
