Moving On to Sage 300 ERP

3 minute read time.

In case you didn't know, we are retiring our Sage Pro ERP and Sage PFW ERP products but we will continue to offer support for them until March 31, 2014.

So as that date fast approaches, now is the time to start planning your successful transition to a modern ERP system.

While we were at Sage Summit last month, a number of Sage PFW and Sage Pro customers approached us at the Sage 300 ERP booth in the Expo Hall trying to gauge which product would be right for them be it Sage 300 ERP, Sage 100 ERP or Sage ERP X3.

For example, we had one PFW customer comparing Sage 300 ERP and Sage ERP X3. One of the first questions we asked him was how many users does he have.

He answered that he didn’t have a substantial amount. After hearing that, we knew right away that Sage ERP X3 would be too big a program for his needs.

After finding out that his company was very light on the inventory side and was more interested in the financial modules like AP, AR and GL, we recommended to him that Sage 300 ERP was a much more suitable product for him.

Also, Sage 300 ERP had an additional GL segment which was perfect for what he wanted because he was running out of space in PFW.

We also had a gentleman approach us with his business partner and they too were PFW customer and comparing Sage 300 ERP to Sage ERP X3. In his situation, he had 8 users but three would using it concurrently. They didn’t want much customization but more of an out of the box install. They wanted AP, AR and the other financial modules as well as some operations and Intelligence, which is built-in Sage 300 ERP. This particular customer told us that he would be maintaining whatever product they would migrate to himself, which includes applying any updates. When we heard that, we told him that with X3, you would need to engage with your business partner a lot more to apply updates; it is not as simple as running an executable file.

When the customer heard this, he told us that he didn't have the time nor resource to apply any X3 updates, we realized he needed something simpler so Sage 300 ERP became the option for him.

We have found that Sage Pro is pretty similar to Sage ERP X3 while Sage 300 ERP is like Sage PFW. However, you should ask yourself the following questions so you can decide which product is right for you:

  • Do you want to customize the code? If so then Sage ERP X3 may suit your needs.
  • Do you have less than 20 users? Then we recommend Sage 300 ERP.
  • Do you need Payroll? Sage 300 ERP is probably the product you want since Sage ERP X3 doesn’t have this particular module.
  • How much manufacturing and distribution do you do? While Sage ERP X3 has great functionality for this, if you barely use, these modules are much easier to run in Sage 300 ERP.
  • If you are coming from a larger organization then Sage ERP X3 might be a more appropriate product but if you are from a smaller organization and it is just you, then we would recommend Sage 300 ERP.

If you have any other questions on which product is right for you, ask us the comments section below.
