Sage 100: New filing statuses are available

Audience

Customers using Sage 100 Payroll version 2.18 or 2.19.

Issues

The following highlights some of the changes that may affect your payroll tax calculations beginning in filing year 2020:

  • New federal filing statuses are available for employees who submit the new version of Form W-4, which has been updated for tax year 2020.
  • New filing statuses for low income tax brackets are available for the state of Arkansas.

After you install the payroll tax update that was released on December 12, 2019, you will see these new filing statuses in Employee Maintenance. However, unless you have updated your Sage 100 Payroll module to version 2.20, withholding taxes will not calculate correctly for an employee if one of these new filing statuses is selected.
  • For Massachusetts, the tax for paid family and medical leave has bee separated into two separate taxes:
    • MAPFMLWH: The description for this tax has been changed to Massachusetts Paid Family Leave Tax Withholding (Employee paid)
    • MAPFMLERLIAB: The description for this tax has been changed to Massachusetts Paid Family Leave Tax ER Liability (Employer paid)
    • MAPMLWH: This new tax is for Paid Medical Leave Withholding (Employee paid)
    • MAPMLERLIAB: This new tax is for Paid Medical Leave Tax ER Liability (Employer paid)

Required Actions

  • Upgrade to Sage 100 payroll 2.20, which is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2020. We recommend that you upgrade to version 2.20 before processing your first payroll run in 2020.
Keep in mind that the Payroll module is a standalone installation. You can upgrade the Payroll module without upgrading your Sage 100. Sage 100 Payroll 2.20 is compatible with Sage 100 2018 (with Product Update 2) and Sage 100 2019.
  • If you have employees who live or work in Massachusetts:
    • Manually enter your employer and employee tax rates in Company Tax Group Setup. Use January 1, 2020 as your effective date.
    • Update your existing tax profiles to reflect that the Paid Family Leave tax and Paid Medical Leave tax are now two separate taxes.
  • Review the Payroll Tax Changes in 2020Q1 Payroll Tax Update Guide.
  • Before processing payroll in tax year 2020, enter your company specific unemployment tax rate with applicable effective date on the Tax Rates tab in Company Tax Group Setup for each state that you process payroll in.
