Lead Deduplication not working

A customer is saying they are experincing an issue where CRM's deduplication is doing a poor job of picking up existing customers in CRM for new leads. After investigating a bit I would have to agree.

See Below. Lead dedupe is set to 'Begins With'. Why wouldn't this lead see a match for Western?

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

    You have shown a screen for the Lead and the Company. I am not sure what the exact issue is.

    By default the Lead dedupe will check against 2 fields (Lead Company Name and Lead Person Lastname). Both the fields are required (by default) and if they are entered a search is carried on the possible duplication of a Lead that matches BOTH these fields.

    That may be the origin of the problem.
