Expanding the Territory Tree

Hi there,

We seem to have reached the upper limit on two of our territory structure branches, but still need the functionality to add more labs to the list. According to the Admin User Guide, it is possible to further expand the structure, but I am at a loss as to how to achieve this. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Kind Regards

    Hi Angie,

You need to rebalance the territories. Here is the excerpt from the admin guide: -

    Rebalancing Territories

The standard capacity for a territory structure is 16 "child territories" on each territory, and five
    territory levels deep.

A complex territory structure may require the expansion of the standard
capacity. If the System Administrator attempts to add more territories than the standard capacity, a
screen prompt is displayed, which tells them to rebalance the territory structure.

Rebalancing updates the territory hierarchy and the associated security rights, and allows the
System Administrator to continue adding territories.

Note: Please refer to Maintaining Territories (page 4-10) for the recommended procedures to follow
    before rebalancing is carried out.

To rebalance the territory tree structure:

    1. Select Administration | Users | Security.

    2. Select Rebalance from the Security and Territory Administration page. The Rebalance page is
    displayed.

Note: Rebalancing the territory tree cannot be undone. Before proceeding the System
Administrator should check that there are no users logged on to the system, and that a backup of
the CRM database has been made. Please refer to Maintaining Territories (page 4-10) for the
recommended procedures to follow before rebalancing is carried out.

    3. Click Next to continue. A message is displayed when the rebalancing process has completed.

    4. Select the Continue button to return to the Security and Territory Administration page. It is now
possible to add new territories from the New Territory page.

As it suggests, do this when there are no users in the system. I would strongly suggest taking a backup of the database before doing a rebalance also.

    Hope that is some help!

    Hi Toby

Thank you for that. I've rebalanced twice and it still won't let me add any new labs into the structures that are full. I keep getting a message telling me to rebalance, then I do, and then get stuck in the loop. Could it be a problem in the software that is preventing me from continuing?

    Thanks again :-)

Well, that certainly isn't what is supposed to happen.

Does the re-balance appear to complete without error when it is run?

Nope, it seems to complete ok but then when I try to add a new territory, the message tells me I need to rebalance. What I would say though, is that we seem to have 19 child territories in both areas in question rather than 16. Is there any finite upper limit?

    Thanks again,

What is the version of CRM you are using?

There is a finite amount, but if you are using a later version of CRM, it is a lot more than 19!

    Hi

We are using v7.1 SP2 patch g hf3. I had thought it was more but can't seem to manage to make it work. We do have a support company, but they don't seem to have the answer to be honest, hence the reason I'm trying to find out myself!

    Thanks for all your input

    Bit of a nightmare scenario.

I have never come across this before, but it is clear that there is something going on, in the data, which means the action is not being carried out correctly.

I test this on 7.2b, and I can enter a lot of territories, with periodic rebalances, so it should be possible.

Without having the data to look at, all I can really suggest is looking into the territories tables, and seeing if anything odd is going on, or running a trace whilst the rebalance is being done, to see what is going on. I am sure your support company has done this already however.

    Hi Toby

Apologies for the delayed response. As yet, no they haven't done this but I will suggest it to them and see if a trace picks anything unusual up. Thank you again for your help on this one!

I know this is a fair few months later, but, just in case someone happens upon this thread. I faced a similar issue and resolved it by addressing the value in terr_NextRangeStart in the territories table.
