Advisory: Impact of end of support for Basic Authentication for Integration with Microsoft Exchange Online

In September of 2019, Microsoft announced that they would retire Basic Authentication for services that access Exchange Online from October 13th 2020.  Microsoft further announced a deferral of this date.

Note: On 31st July 2020 Sage confirmed support for OAuth 2.0 in Sage CRM 2020 R2.

In September 2021, Microsoft announced that effective October 1, 2022, they would begin disabling Basic authentication for Outlook, EWS, RPS, POP, IMAP, and EAS protocols in Exchange Online. SMTP Auth will also be disabled if it is not being used.

Support for OAuth 2.0 (Modern Authentication) to support specific features has been added to the following versions of Sage CRM.

  • Exchange Integration (Sage CRM 2020 R2 onwards)
  • Internal Mail Client (Sage CRM 2021 R1 onwards)
  • Advanced Email Manager (Sage CRM 2021 R1 onwards)
  • Import of Contacts and Emails (Sage CRM 2022 R2 onwards)

Q: My company uses Exchange Online. Will Sage CRM continue to work?
A: Customers using Exchange Online will need to ensure that they are using Sage CRM 2021 R1 onwards to ensure all features that depend on Exchange Online are available.  Make sure that your instance of Sage CRM is configured to work with OAuth 2.0 (Modern Authentication).

Q: My company uses Exchange On-Premise. Will Sage CRM continue to work?
A: Yes.  You can continue to work with Basic Authentication.

Q: Is OAuth 2.0 (Modern Authentication) available for Exchange On-Premise?
A: OAuth 2.0 is only an authentication option for Exchange Online.  It is not available for On-Premise.

Q: Can we use Hybrid Modern Authentication (HMA)?
A: No.  We will explore Hybrid Modern Authentication for Exchange in Sage CRM 2023 R1.

Q: Will Basic Authentication stop working for Exchange On-Premise?
A: No.  Microsoft Advises that developers must use either NTLM or Basic Authentication when connecting to Microsoft Exchange On-Premise
