Advisory: Support for Outlook Plugins in Windows 11 using Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge

This advisory supersedes the previous advisory

Advisory: Sage CRM, Windows 11, and Internet Explorer

We had previously advised that customers who rely on the Classic or Lite Outlook plugins are advised not to upgrade to Windows 11.  This advice had been based on experience of pre-release versions of Windows 11.

  • Sage confirms support for using the Sage CRM Outlook Lite and Outlook Classic Plugins with Windows 11 and Edge in Internet Explorer Mode with important limitations.

About Explorer Mode in Windows 11

IE mode on Microsoft Edge uses the Trident MSHTML engine from Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) to allow the ActiveX technology used by the plugins to work.

Please make sure your version of Windows 11 and Edge are fully UpToDate.

To Get Internet Explorer Mode in Windows 11

1) Open Edge, Go to Settings

2) Navigate to Default Browser

3) Allow Sites to Reload in IE (See Note 2 below when working on network where browsers are managed by organisational policies.)

set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode to either Default or Allow

4) Select How and When Sites Will Load in IE Mode

5) Test the behaviour of the Outlook Plugin when filing emails

When working in IE Mode within Edge the Taskbar Icon will show as Internet Explorer.

Tested Scenarios

Sage has completed testing the following scenarios:

Note 1:

When “Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge” set to “Always” some Outlook Lite plugin users may experience following:

An IE browser screen may pop up for a moment which will then close automatically when clicking File e-mail button on Windows 11.  Where the client system has been upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 the IE pop up may not close automatically and will show as Blank Page.

The blank screen issue is because of Edge delivering a “Works better in Edge” message.  If third-party browser extensions in IE browser are disabled (Settings -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> uncheck 'Enable third-party browser extensions'), this pop up will be supressed.

Note 2:

If you are on a device managed by your organization, you will NOT see the option to Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer through the More tools menu.

In this situation, you can set your site to be opened in IE mode by configuring IE mode policies. For the detailed steps, you can refer to this document.

docs.microsoft.com/.../edge-ie-mode-policies

There are two steps required to configure IE mode:

Configure Internet Explorer integration

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/edge-ie-mode-policies#configure-internet-explorer-integration

Redirect sites from Microsoft Edge to IE mode

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/edge-ie-mode-policies#redirect-sites-from-microsoft-edge-to-ie-mode

Sage is currently redesigning its email management features that are currently provided by the Classic and Lite Outlook Plugins for Sage CRM 2022 R2 due to be released end of July 2022.  This redesign will remove all dependency on browser plugins.

This applies to Sage CRM stand-alone and when integrated with Sage accounting products. Sage 50, Sage 100, Sage 200, Sage 1000, Sage 300, Sage X3 and Sage Intacct.
