Claiming RDEC and SME in the same return?

The update to version 4.1 includes the following validation check:

Additional validations have been included to prevent a R&D claim record being saved with the R&D claim type Enhanced relief – incurred by SME if a R&D claim record with the R&D claim type RDEC credits has already been saved, and vice versa.

Any existing R&D claim record will only be affected if you edit and try to save it.

So am I understanding correctly that Sage no longer supports companies who have seperte projects using ech of the schemes?  This certainly seems to be the case when I have tried to claim under both since the update.

    Hi Sam,

    Thanks for using Sage City.

I reached out to my colleagues in Product Development for a little more insight in this area. It's their understanding that the R&D claim type 'RDEC credits' is only for large companies, which is why a claim would be prevented if there is already a claim for 'Enhanced Relief claimed by SME' as this would mean a claim is being made for two different company sizes. There is an RDEC type available for SMEs - 'RDEC SME subsidised/capped' if that is appropriate in this case?

I hope this provides a little more information, but by all means raise this with Sage Technical Support if you would like us to look at it further.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for getting back to me.  It is not the case that a company can only use one scheme.  An SME might have two R&D projects, one which qualifies for SME scheme and another which does not because perhaps it receives project specific state aid.  In this instance the project receiving project specific state aid can instead claim under RDEC.   One company, one return, two R&D schemes.

All of the clients that we use Sage for have this two scheme scenario and adding this erroneous validation to version 4.1 effectively makes Sage redundant for us!  Very frustrating.

I have spoken with Sage technical support and they can't really offer any further suggestions as it seems this is a case of the developers not understanding the legislation.

    Kind regards

    Hi Andy,

I have just tried deleting and starting again and using the RDEC SME/Capped option and it does seem to be allowing me to progress.  Sage Support did try this on my machine yesterday to no avail but seems something is working now.  So I will continue and try and file the return, wish me luck :-)

    Kind regards

    Sam
