I would recommend running the Aged Debtors & Aged Creditors report as these will show you any outstanding Credit Notes. If they appear on this report, it means that they have yet to be allocated. 

With regards the future dated transactions, this is in relation to any transactions after the date you are trying to change it on. For example, if you have any transactions dated after today, these will need to be voided/deleted first before you can change the VAT Scheme. The best thing would be to run the Audit Trail report and expand the date to include a few years in advanced. You will be able to see when is the last transaction that was created.
