consistently getting sync error messages

Hi, we have v28 Sage 50cloud and we are consistently getting sync error messages and quite often messages advising a user is processing (however they generally aren't and are locked in).  In the last 2 weeks I have dealt with about 20 sync error message or people showing as processing but aren't (this is for all users).  We have now moved over to having Sage on one P.C. and everybody that works in the office accesses it via the network and users working from home will access it using RDA. I am not IT so this is how Sage have explained it to me.  My I.T. company are now getting involved as I have spent far too long on these error messages.  The I.T. company are now suggesting using a VPN to access sage, does that not defeat the purpose of having sage cloud?

I welcome any advise and if anybody has the same issues and how they resolved it.  I get mixed messages when contacting Sage.  FYI we generally have 3 users working in the office and 2 or 3 working from home.  We have a leased line at work with 100mb up/down.
