When do I need to actually upgrade to Sage 50 Cloud Accounts for MTD (i currently use sage 50 accounts professional 2012)

SOLVED

Hi,

I am aware that I need to upgrade my software and get the Sage 50 cloud accounts as the one i'm using at the moment does not support this.

Our company has been told that our first MTD VAT return is due on or after 1st October 2019, this means it wont be until the end of February 2020 i need to make the first VAT return using the new software for the return quarter Nov 2019 to Jan 2020.

My question is, when do i actually need to get the new software?  Sage are pushing me to upgrade now but I am not wanting to pay for something i don't need for another 6 months or so.

Can I just keep using Sage 50 accounts up until say January 2020 and then upgrade, all the data will be transferred to the new software and I will be able to submit my return through the cloud accounts software at the end of February onwards?

    Hi Graeme,

    Thanks for using Sage City.

You can sign up for Sage 50cloud at anytime, however if you want to do it just before your MTD VAT Return that also won't be a problem.

Before you switch on the MTD feature, you should:

Submit your last non-MTD VAT Return, and
Sign up for MTD with HMRC.

Our MTD checklist can be found here

    Hi Graeme,

I saw your query, and just wanted to let you know about AmbitionMTD, which has had great feedback.  Means you do not need to upgrade the Sage software so can continue to use your current version and can use the AmbitionMTD software to do the VAT submission to HMRC.  Check out the AmbitionMTD website here - http://ambitionmtd.co.uk/

    Hope this helps :)

Graeme, Sage cloud is a waste of money as far as I can see, I would recommend not upgrading just now. They will force you into a subscription based service where you will be locked in to paying far more for what is essentially the same software as you already have.   50c is not a true cloud application; your master data is still stored on a local machine.  There is no real functional benefit, other than the MTD compliance (which Sage could have implemented easily on the existing software anyway).    You can stay with your existing Sage version and comply with MTD by using one of the vast array of 3rd party bridging solutions to submit your VAT (we are using 1click accounts but there are many others).  Don't be bullied by Sage; they are trying to sell old software as something new inside the trojan horse of MTD compliance!

Sarah, that's quite a strong statement!  I use Sage every day and have seen significant improvements over the last few versions and the cloud capability has been a huge benefit, allowing me to work from home on occasion.  But you're right - you can use bridging software and don't have to upgrade. But then most people like to upgrade their wardrobe and mobile phones when they start to look tired so it's a matter of priorities really.
